Cómo escribir la hora

En los Estados Unidos, el reloj de 12 horas se usa; lo que significa que el tiempo se da con las iniciales AM significar las primeras 12 horas y PM significar las segundas. Mediodia es 12PM mientras medianoche es 12AM. El reloj de 24 horas solo se usa en contextos militares. El Reino Unido se usa el reloj de 24 horas par escribira, pero para decir usualmente se añade "in the morning" o "in the afternoon" con el reloj de 12 horas.

Cómo escribir las fechas

En los Estados Unidos, la fecha se da en la forma mes-día-año cuando escrita y dicha. También, el día se dice como la palabra ordinal. Por ejemplo, si hoy es 20 de octubre de 2008, diría que "today is October twentieth, two thousand eight." El ordinal es opcional cuando la fecha está escrita. En el Reino Unido, la fecha se da en la forma día-mes-año.

En Estados Unidos es común decir los años en grupos de dos números en vez de números normales. Eso viene del "contar en cienes" que es comun tambien para cantidades de dinero u otros usos. El año 1984 sería o "Nineteen eighty-four" o (en un lenguaje un poco mas formal y algo anticuado) "Nineteen hundred eighty-four". La única excepción a eso parece ser la década entre 2000 y 2009 cuando se dijo "two thousand...". El año 2016 por ejemplo es frecuentemente dicho "twenty sixteen" en vez de "two thousand sixteen", especialmente en lenguaje informal.

NOTA: En los EEUU la propina es una costumbre. No es requerida, pero se considera un gesto cortés del cliente porque los sueldos de los camareros son muy bajos. Usualmente es 15 o 20 por ciento de la cuenta. Sin embargo, si el servicio del camarero es pésimo, los clientes no dejan propina o dejan solamente un centavo.
